• Apprentice Plumber: These plumbers learn everything by completing on-the-job
training but they are also required to complete classroom training. Most
apprentice plumbers join the field through a local union, but some will also
choose to work with a licensed plumber.
• Journeyman Plumber: An apprentice plumber will be considered a journeyman
plumber when they have spent at least 4 years in the industry. Different states
may have different requirements, but some states require apprentice plumbers to
also complete an exam to start working as a journeyman plumber.
• Master Plumber: A master plumber is at the highest level of experience and
training, and they are in a position to help you with all plumbing issues. Different
states have different rules and need a journeyman plumber to fulfill certain
requirements to start working as a master plumber. Journeyman plumbers who
are in the industry for long enough can apply to the Contractors Board in their
respective states to get the status of a master plumber.
