Wisconsin has no shortage of cheese factories – we lead the nation in both number of cheese plants and varieties of cheese produced. But what to do with all that cheese? Try out this easy, yet very tasty recipe! It was adapted from a recipe of the same name in the 2013 Costco cookbook, Enjoy Cooking the Costco Way. Ing redient s Ins ruc ions t t 1. Fry the sausage links in olive oil until cooked through, about 10 minutes. Cool and then slice in half lengthwise. In a bowl, combine eggs, milk, and mustard. Add salt and pepper to taste. Set aside. 1 pound sausage 1 ts olive oil 8 slices ham 9 slices swiss cheese 2. Butter a baking dish and layer four slices of ham, then three slices of cheese, half the sausage, and three slices of 6 slices buttermilk bread 4 eggs 1 cup milk 1 tbs mustard salt and pepper * Makes four delicious servings. bread. Repeat the layers and then top with the remaining cheese. Pour the egg mixture over the casserole, then cover and refrigerate for at least two hours. 3. Cover with foil and bake at 350° F for 20 minutes, then remove the foil and bake another 25 minutes. Brown the top with the broiler. This recipe is great for snacking while you work. If you buy sliced cheese it often comes in a package of ten, which leaves you with one slice left over after putting together the sandwich. I use packaged ham, and I find that covering the whole piece takes about 2 ¾ slices of bread at the size I bake it at, again leaving a bit for snacking. I’m not a fan of waiting for hours after I get home to eat dinner, so I usually make this over three evenings. After dinner the first night I bake the bread (buttermilk bread is extremely easy to make) and after dinner the second night I put the casserole together. Then it goes in the oven for dinner when I get home the next day. Also at: www.Facebook.com/SmallTownsWI | www.Twitter.com/SmallTownsWI | www.Instagram.com/SmallTownsWI p.19
