NATIONAL MAKE A DIFFERENCE DAY

National Make a Difference Day is on October 22 ; what will you do to make a difference ? You can do something simple that could cause a huge change . You could volunteer at a shelter or a soup kitchen . If you can ’ t make it to one of those you could try helping someone in need . Helping out your neighbors is something super easy to do , you could help them mow or clean and they ’ d appreciate you for it . Going to an elderly home and spending time with someone could change their mood . You could offer to take care of someone ’ s dogs . Babysitting is easy and fun to do , lots of parents want someone they can trust with their kids . As you can see , you can make a difference by doing something that is super simple .

Columbus Day is a U . S . holiday that commemorates the landing of Christopher Columbus in the New World on October 12 , 1942 . The Italian born explorer had two months earlier , backed by the Spanish monarchs he intended to chart the sea route to China , India , and the fabled gold , Spice Islands of Asia . Instead in the Bahamas becoming the first European to explore America since the Vikings set up colonies in Greenland and Newfoundland during the 10th century . On Columbus Day some Americans celebrate the anniversary of the discovery with church services and other activities .
Towns and small cities celebrate by parades , and other large events . Many celebrations are in Italian-American communities . In Hawaii , Columbus Day is celebrated as Discovery Day , but it ' s not a state holiday .
It originated from Italian-American heritage was first held in San Francisco in 1869 . Some government offices are closed because of Columbus Day , schools are not required to be closed on Columbus Day , and Post Offices are not required to be closed either .
