Some takeaways from the Career Exploration Day at the National Guard Armory in Kearney include “You could end up doing a career you could never imagine yourself doing,” “You never know if you will like your intended major until you go to classes. It’s okay to change your mind and try something new,” and “Get a part-time job in the industry you are interested in.” October events include Stomp out Bullying, Wear Blue for National Bully prevention day on October 2nd, Diesel Career Fair at Central Community College in Hastings on October 5th, University of Nebraska Health Fair on October 11th, ASVAB testing for Juniors on October 12, and INVENTure day for grades 7-8 in Loup City on October 26th. Red Ribbon week is October 23rd to October 31st. TADA will be holding activities that week to celebrate staying drug and alcohol free. ACT Preparation nights for Juniors and Seniors taking the ACT October 28th or December 9th are October 2nd, October 10th, October 16th, and October 23rd from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the After School Program room. They are using the John Baylor Test prep program online. Scholarships For local and state scholarships, visit Scholarship Quest at EducationQuest.org. It is never too early to begin searching for scholarships as well as making your list of strengths, volunteer activities, and other notable characteristics about yourself. Prepare for the FAFSA with free programs and resources If you’re a senior, it’s time to start preparing for the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). You’ll complete the form after October 1 and typically, before April 1 depending on your college’s priority deadline. Colleges will use your FAFSA results to determine how much they will award you in federal, state and college-based financial aid. Apply 2 College day (sponsored by Education Quest) Seniors applied to several different colleges on September 12th. Meghan Kratzer has been accepted into the Veterinary Technology Systems program at the University of Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture as well as admitted to the University of Nebraska-Kearney. Tyren Howard has been admitted to the University of Nebraska-Kearney and University of Nebraska-Lincoln. As I receive notification of acceptance, I will continue to help celebrate these accomplishments. ATTN: Senior Parents!! Education Quest’s Financial Aid Night will be held on Monday, October 2nd, 2017 in the High School Library beginning at 6:30 P.M. This will be distance learning but Education Quest specialists will be on the other end ready to answer questions. They take students and parents through application processes, the FAFSA form, as well as answer any general questions. 9
