Small Town Times May 2018 Sophomores Learn About Post High School Opportunities By Mrs. Sawyer Recently Mrs. Poland took the Sophomores on a field trip to Kearney for campus visits UNK and CCC, and a business tour to NPPD. They first visited CCC (Central Community Col- lege) and toured the newly installed campus on 11th street. One of the highlights of CCC was their Mechatron- ics Lab, where students gain a working knowledge of the collaboration between mechanics and engineering and how machines are used in the work force. Next on the itinerary was a walk through the central office of NPPD, Nebraska Public Power District. Mrs. Po- Goodner trying on low voltage gloves at land thought the best part of NPPD was entering the con- Braydon NPPD. trol center and learning about all the ins and outs of sup- pling energy to area consumers. She thought the kids made connections when they could see the different power sources highlighted on the screen. The last stop of the day was at UNK, University of Ne- braska Kearney. While there, the students experienced a full campus tour. They were given a taste for campus liv- ing in the dorms, lecture halls, biology labs and the Fine Arts Building. With all the information the students gained, the most m emorable moment was receiving a free t-shirt at the Admissions Office. Overall Mrs. Poland hopes the field trip broadens their horizons for after high school options. She knows Sophomore class on an admissions tour not everyone will follow the same track, but hopes they at UNK. are successful in no matter what path they choose.■ 9
