Small Town Times April 2018 Sports GIRLS BASKETBALL by: Siarah Willenberg The Lady Spartan Basketball team made it to the state basket- ball tournament in Lincoln March 1-3. They ended their season with a 20-4 record. Although the girls fell short in sub-district play they entered the tournament with a wild card. In a thrilling first round, game the Spartans played the defend- ing state champions, Guardian Angel Central Catholic, and beat them 49 - 43. For the next round of Ansley-Litchfield State Basket- ball, they played Bruning- Davenport-Shickley, where the Spartans fell short 62-50. In the consolation game, they played Pleasanton and got the win with a score of 52-48,and came home with a 3rd plase state finish. It was a great season for the Lady Spartans and they had a great ex- perience making it to State.■ BOYS BASKETBALL by: Nam Boonphakdee Despite not qualifying for State, the Spartan boys did manage to make a run in Sub-districts, mak- ing it all the way to sub-district fi- nals. The boys’ basketball coach, Troy Schirmer, has done an amazing job at guiding the boys this season, win- ning half of the non-conference games that they played, ending the season by losing at the Sub- district finals against Elm Creek with a score of 68-57. For the run at a chance at State Qualifier, the Ansley-Litchfield Spartans started off by winning against the Pleasanton Bulldogs in the first round of sub-districts 61- 39. The boys then continued their streak with a follow-up win against the Overton Eagles 72-68 in the next round, before succumbing to the Elm Creek Buffaloes at the fi- nals.■ 6
