Every year on February 14 , flowers , candy , and gifts are exchanged between loved ones . Valentine ’ s Day is the second most popular day of the year for sending cards , right behind Christmas . Valentine ' s Day was celebrated differently back in the 5th century . One way is that , in the Middle Ages , they drew the name of their valentine from a bowl . They then had to wear it on their sleeve for a week . Some people don ’ t celebrate Valentine ’ s Day with a significant other . Studies say that about 15 % of women send themselves flowers on Valentine ’ s Day , and at least 9 million people buy their pets a gift . Back in the Middle Ages if you were single , you would marry the first single person of the opposite gender that you met on Valentine ’ s day .
