MLK DAY

Martin Luther King , Jr . Day is a federal holiday that is celebrated on the third Monday of January . We celebrate his achievements , life and most important of all we celebrate how he helped to end racial segregation in the United States . His famous , well-known speech was “ I Have a Dream ” speech . After he gave this speech , he was the youngest man to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize . Shortly after , on April 4 th , he was assassinated and many campaigns were started for that day to become a holiday . After it was passed , many states refused to celebrate this holiday . However , in the year 2000 , all 50 states for the very first time promoted this holiday . After it became a holiday , Congress passed the Civil Rights Act of 1968 . This stated that discrimination was prohibited in housing on the basis of race , religion , and national origin .

Six students from Litchfield Junior High competed in the District 8 FFA Quiz Bowl Competition on December 14 th , including : Tessa Shafer , Kaylee Rosentreader , Nathan Wardyn , Gavin Cole , Faith Heapy , and Alana Betke . A total of 43 teams competed .
