Remembering 9 / 11 By : RaNay Casper
On the day of the 11th of September , 2001 the Islamic extremist group Al-Qaida hijacked four airliners and carried out suicide attacks against the United States . Two airplanes were flown into the World Trade Center towers in New York City , a third plane hit the Pentagon just outside of Washington , D . C , and the fourth plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania . The first plane impact left a burning hole near the 80th floor of the 110-story skyscraper . The crash instantly killed hundreds of people and left hundreds more trapped on the higher floors . The evacuation of the twin towers began , while television cameras broadcast live images of what appeared to be a freak accident . 18 minutes after the first plane hit the second plane appeared out of the sky , turned sharply towards the World Trade Center , and hit the south tower near the 60th floor . It caused a massive explosion that showered burning debris over surrounding buildings and the streets below . While millions watched the events unfolding in New York , the third plane , American Airlines Flight 77 , circled over Washington , D . C ., then slammed into the west side of the Pentagon . Jet fuel from the Boeing 757 caused a devastating inferno that led to the structural collapse of a portion of the concrete building . As told , 125 military personnel and civilians were killed in the Pentagon , but alongside there were 64 people aboard the airliner .
The event led to extensive death and destruction , triggering a major U . S . movement to combat terrorism and defining the presidency of George W . Bush . Over 3,000 people were killed during the attacks in New York City and Washington , D . C ., including more than 400 police officers and firefighters . Even today , the sadness and horror felt on that day still echoes in America , and we will never forget the terrorist attacks of 9 / 11 / 2001 .
