At this time, for our prevention intervention studies, we are particularly excited about the concept of a lubricant (or microbicide gel) for HIV prevention. Our previous studies contributed to the approval of the anti-HIV pill, Truvada®, for HIV prevention, and we are now testing a rectal gel containing a similar medication which, if found safe and effective, could help reduce HIV risk. We are also enrolling a study that will help develop novel methods to measure HIV medications in people’s bodies. Results from the study will be useful for future public health strategies using anti-HIV medications to prevent infection in HIV-negative individuals.
I encourage anyone interested in learning more about our organization and studies to visit <www.Bridge HIV.org>.
Q: What do you want the general public to know about HIV prevention that we don’t already know?
HIV/AIDS is still a critical issue. As mentioned before, we are seeing an increase in infections in particular communities and need targeted and culturally responsive tools to address health inequities. However, HIV/AIDS is not a community specific epidemic. HIV/AIDS does not discriminate. Globally, over 35 million people are currently living with HIV/AIDS and there is still no cure. Beyond individual health, the HIV epidemic impacts households, communities, and the development and economic growth of entire countries. Reducing HIV prevalence is about prevention but it’s also about addressing underlying factors, such as stigma, discrimination, health access and sex education.
