HEALTH CARE expertise? Dr. Robinson says it takes time and commitment, but it’s worth it. “If someone is interested in doing this, you need full licensure and three years of successful practice in Saskatchewan and to be in good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Saskatchewan (CPSS). Your practice needs to be busy enough and to have sufficient space to accommodate your candidate and be able to have at least three physicians in the clinic to provide continuity. There is adequate financial remuneration, and you may bill for patients seen by the candidate as in any student mentor situation,” said Dr. Robinson. “The main drawbacks include having to point out deficiencies and occasionally having some difficult discussions with your candidate. Some candidates also need a lot of input in the beginning and you must remember your role is to assess and not to teach skills that should already be known to the candidate. Another benefit is that you have to keep your own skills sharp as your candidate may quickly challenge your practice methods if you are off guidelines. You are also responsible for any patient care provided by your candidate and therefore you have to assess each and every visit ASAP after the fact and sit in for at least one visit a day.” SIPPA assessors also attend annual retreats that are held Bonkowski, Roadmap contest winners from left: Kristin throughout the year where they can Ricarda Bentham and Megan Sander learn more about SIPPA, about the candidates that they will meet and about the skills that each one brings to the program. The assessors also have the opportunity at these retreats to bring specific ideas forward that may potentially benefit the program overall. There’s always a need for more dedicated professionals like Dr. Robinson and his colleagues who can act as assessors and ensure the program’s success.
