E VO L E N IET Y ME SO C DICAL EN T tional network of physicians, colleagues, friends, family and complete strangers, that Dr. Jolene Titus’ was wheeled off the plane in Cape Town to be met by a fanfare of love, support and celebration on the night of January 12, 2014. B YOUR SMA A few days later Dr. Titus shared a private moment on Facebook. “It’s 5 a.m. in the morning, I can hear the birds chirping outside my window pale, the sun is barely lifting its head above the mountain peak, the dark night is slowly turning into day. I awoke to the most beautiful view a person can see this time of the morning. That is the sight of my husband and kids peacefully sleeping in their beds.” The Titus family is deeply grateful to everyone who made it possible for them to return home and be with their family at this difficult time. On March 9, 2014 Dr. Jolene Titus passed away in Cape Town, South Africa. Thanks to the MBS, her Meadow Lake “family” and donors from around the world, she was able to spend almost two months at home surrounded by her friends and family. Fundraising efforts at www.gofundme.com/Jolene-Titus have now turned to support Jolene’s young family as they rebuild their lives in South Africa. About the Medical Benevolent Society T he Medical Benevolent Society (MBS) exists to provide financial support to physicians, residents, medical students, their surviving spouses and dependent children in need. The MBS was formed in 1962 by the physicians of Saskatchewan to provide for the spouses and children of Drs. Knox and Nixon, two key players in the implementation of Medicare, who died suddenly in a plane crash. It has since expanded to provide assistance to all physicians in need and their spouses/dependents through ongoing donations from Saskatchewan physicians. It is established and directed jointly by the Saskatchewan Medical Association and the College of Physicians and Surgeons. To request financial assistance, or to make a donation to the Society, please contact Brenda Senger, Director of Physician Support Programs at [email protected]. SMA NEWS DIGEST | SPRING 2014 11
