rather wear a hoodie and some
shorts. They’ve spent their whole
lives watching me go above and be-
yond with my outfits, so now that
they’re coming into their own styles
(preteens), they would rather keep
it simple, although their friends
go nuts when I clean out my closet
to get rid of things and they try to
get everything that they can, being
that I have a small frame and they
can fit my clothes. I also styled a
visual arts artist for an event he had
and it was great, I love shopping
for and styling men. I’m blessed to
have a husband who is supportive
and down for letting me pick out
clothes and style him whenever I
feel like it. Sometimes I just bring
clothes home and I’m like “Bae, try
this on” and he doesn’t even care
he’s always like ‘ok’.
BW: Would you consider having
plus-size styles in the future? Why
or why not?
FS: Yes actually, I’m hosting my
1st fashion show, ‘Fashion S.L.U.T.
Walk’ November 3rd. and I’m using
that platform to launch my upcom-
ing plus-size line. A good friend
of mine, Jyichi (@lashmebyjcooley
on Instagram) is one of my models
for the launch of this line. I feel like
fashion is for everybody and I want
to make a statement with Fash-
ion Slut, which is *when you look
good, you feel good.
BW: What motivates you to con-
tinue your fashion line despite
everything else going on in your
life?
FS: My children and family of
course. Everything I do is for them.
I plan to create a legacy for my
family and generations to come. I
want my great-grandchildren to
live off of this foundation that I'm
building. I wanna build a legacy
for my children’s children, kinda
like Paris Hilton’s grandfather did
for her and her family. I’m build-
ing something for the future of my
family for generations to come, not
just while I’m here. I’m working to
become a legend. I have 3 children
in my home, a total of 7 between my
husband and myself. I’ve even incor-
porated some of my family members
into collections that I’ll be launching
within my brand, such as ‘Josephine
Pearls’ (my old brand name), the
Cadillac collection, which is named
after my dad whose nickname was
‘Caddy’, the Kash collection, in rep-
resentation of my men’s line inspired
by my husband, and the name of my
previous magazine ‘The Barbarin’,
inspired by my grandfather, a jazz
musician/trombonist. FS: No. I’m an individual, and
nothing intimidates me. Paula can
be selling the exact same thing as
me across the street, but Paula ain’t
me. I see lots of boutiques selling
lots of the same things, and lots of
trends that I follow, because what
helps me stand out from the crowd
is my creativity. I believe that the
small things are what makes the
biggest difference. Details matter.
I can’t say that enough. Dressing
how you feel and adding your own
touch is important. When I see
trends, I wanna get in on that, but
small things like a broach, accesso-
ries, any creative touch always gives
me a creative edge over everyone
else doing the same thing. Besides,
I don’t limit myself to this city. I
have customers from all over. My
audience is just different because
I’m different and I’m ok with that.
Also, not sure if everyone knows
what all is going on in my life, so
I'll fill you in. I work in Informa-
tion Technology industry for DXC
Technology as a Security Engineer,
which I just recently got promoted
to. I already have a Bachelor's degree
in Communication with a concen-
tration in Technology. I am also in
grad school currently obtaining a
Master's of Science degree in Com
puter Information Systems, which
I will be done in May 2020. I am a
wife and full-time mom. I run my
own business with the online bou-
tique (www.fashionslutbrand.com),
fashion blog, a fashion stylist and an
editor-in-chief of my own fashion
magazine publication . I also cook,
clean, nuture, and I love God. I be-
lieve in speaking life into existence. BW: How do you balance work,
home, and being an entrepreneur?
FS: I work full time and run my
own business and I love doing both
because I have a passion for both
IT and Fashion, therefore I ahve
the best of both worlds. I also never
turn down an opportunity to make
a sale in my business, no matter
what time it is, day or night, I’m
gonna make that sale. The biggest
balance for me is my daily affirma-
tions and prayer. Once you believe
in yourself , you can do anything.
Belief and faith builds character.
You become stronger. I find peace
in my affirmations. I literally look
in the mirror every morning and
tell myself “I love everybody and
everybody loves me”. This helps
me stay prepared and equipped for
each day. I speak life into myself
so when I walk out of the door,
I’m prepared for whatever task or
obstacle comes my way.
BW: Is it hard building a brand
in such a small city with so many
familiar people?
