SUMMER INTERNSHIPS BY THE STUDENTS OF PSYCHOLOGY MAY – JULY, 2019 Rapporteur: Psychology Area of the Department of Social Science Introduction: Every year to enrich students learning experience SLS, PDPU encourages internship in applied areas. For May - July, 2019 Department of Psychology facilitated Internship in various applied areas. As external mentors Dr. Rajendra Anand, Medical Superintendent, Kanoria De-Addiction Centre, Chirag Parmar, Clinical Psychiatrist from Government Institute of Mental Health, Gandhinagar and Dr.Ritu Sharma, Associate Professor-Psychology, SLS, PDPU facilitated as internal mentors for the internships at Kanoria Hospital and Government Institute of Mental Health situated in Shahibaug, Ahmedabad. Kanoria Hospital Two students of SLS 2017 batch (Akanksha Rathore, Avani Vaghela, Astha Aloria, Bhavya Logar, Sanskruti Patel, Shailly Vyas and Ananya Yadav) interned 25 days at Kanoria Hospital and research center, Gandhinagar to gain an insight into the functioning of a de-addiction center and also psychotherapy. Their focus was to collect the medical and general history of each patient that was admitted. They also got the opportunity to accompany the in-house psychiatrist in her counselling sessions. Apart from learning the functioning of a de-addiction center, they were also fortunate to access and utilize the center’s vast research library in fields of psychiatry and psychology and attend a few seminars for the same. The hospital was welcoming to their presence and open to their questions. Their internship was an enriching experience for the students. This will help them in their future endeavors as their first practical exposure to counselling and hospital management. Government Institute of Mental Health Ten students of SLS 2016 batch (Nirja Mistry, Priyanka Mistry, Hiteshree Dudani, Aditi Jain, Moksha Meghani, Misha shah, Nishmin Unwalla and Vipanshi Chedda) interned at the Government Institute of Mental Health. It is one of the well-known hospitals for mental care in Gujarat. It has a well-disciplined, well-educated and clinically experienced team of doctors and nurses. The team of ten students from SLS were divided into four groups of two to three members. Each group were assigned for various departments. As there were four departments in the hospital, each group got a chance to work in each of the departments for a week. The students gained knowledge of how each department functioned and the activities that were done daily. They gained first-hand knowledge regarding the different psychological techniques used by professionals. The students got exposure to four main departments, i.e. Social Work, Psychology, Psychiatry and Occupational Therapy. The students also got a chance to visit the male and female wards in the hospital and study the files of the patients to get details on their case history and disorders. They had a chance to interact with the patients and look at the OPD rounds conducted by the doctor on a daily basis. 7
