SECOND WAVE OF DEVELOPMENT

The second wave of development of communication routes in Hungary arised especially after the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867 as a result of the implementation of Deak´s development plan of the Monarchy. Ferencz Deák wanted to raise the underdeveloped parts of Hungary to the level of Austrian part of the monarchy.

Geomorphological structure of the country forced the builders to follow natural landscape features, mainly river valleys. This trend was confirmed after 1872, when Hungary installed the first telegraph network.

The communication network was thus extended beyond traditional postal routes from Trnava not only towards Trenčín, but continues along basin of the river Vah to Zilina, Turiec and Liptov.

It also improved the connection with the central Slovakia and form there it led to the mountains of Štiavnické Vrchy and towns Zvolen, Banska Bystrica and Liptov region.

They have also created the Southern Corridor followed by the basin of Ipeľ river through Lučenec, R. Sobota, Tornala, Rožňava and Košice.

Only a few people are now recognizingthe fact that after 1867 Magna Via predicted the level of economic prosperity of each region of northern Hungary- Slovakia! Therefore, it is clear that the main communication arteries of Slovakia are kept to this day in the footsteps of the builders of via Magna and its predecessors.
