Henrik Vibskov Menswear
Spring Summer 2017 by George Reece
There are a great many positive things
to say about the new collection by
Henrik Vibskov, Danish designer,
drummer, film-maker. The trouble is
knowing where to start. Titled “The
Salami Kitchen Of The Non-Existent”,
the collection is cacophonous – a riot
of strong contrasts and bright colours,
gumptious silhouettes and evocative
detail. But despite its range and
boldness, it speaks remarkably clearly
as a collection, and provides insights
into the entertaining mind of the
designer himself.
Perhaps we can best begin by
dispensing with the salami issue. For
the Paris unveiling the runway was
bedecked in odd red woollen tubes.
Dozens of them. Hundreds. Perhaps a
tongue-in-cheek symbol of Danish
pride. But whether intentionally or not
their tessellating geometric patterns
and their long, undulating layout
created an impression as a whole
rather more of the traditional Chinese
carnival dragon than of the
delicatessen. And the Oriental vibes
sang through in the garments too,
though they vied for position with
Pierrot-like and fairytale elements;
