Walter Van Beirendonck Menswear
Spring Summer 2017 by George Reece
Imagine a British village green. It is midSummer. Butterflies flit aimlessly and
contentedly on a warm breeze. You are
sitting in a deckchair, sipping Pimms, or
champagne, or a warm brown beer
(whatever you prefer), and eating a slice of
Victoria Sponge. Then an alien spaceship
lands right in the middle of the cricket
square, lights flashing, chromed and
bejewelled panels reflecting and refracting
the sunlight into a thousand thousand
rainbows.
I don’t know whether the Belgian
designer has ever been to Henley
Regatta, but his Spring/Summer
collection for 2017 would fit right in
there, though maybe not in 2017 but in
3017. It’s a fabulous celebration of colour
and line, vivid Maypole ribbons flowing
liberally throughout, teaming up with
bright barbershop stripes and rosettes to
adorn beautifully clean, well-constructed
garments and lend them a futuristic
pizzazz.
Congratulations. You have just imagined the Generous, outsized buckle and strap
