Agnés B Menswear Spring Summer
2017
by George Reece
A funny thing about fashion design,
and the arts in general, is that the
weirder, more aggressive, more
outlandish you can be, the more likely
you are to attract attention and
admiration. Something I’ve often
wondered, however, is whether
attention attracted equals attention
retained. Is it better in the long run to
shock and appal indiscriminately, in
the hope of finding an audience, or to
build one slowly through honest, solid
design and gentle, tasteful innovation?
It is perhaps beyond the scope of this
article to say for certain, but the new
S/S’17 menswear collection by Agnés
B, unveiled in Paris last month,
provides some fascinating fuel for the
discussion.
It is to the latter school of thought that
this designer belongs. Her new looks
are eminently wearable, thoroughly
sensible, and quietly stylish. There is
something to satisfy most tastes, from
Islamic-flavoured shalwar kameez
combinations (reservedly pinstriped
and accessorised) to baseball caps and
sarongs, bomber jackets to boiler suits,
tuxedos to roughspun draperies
