Hygienists from coast to coast are finding out that nothing in dentistry is more rewarding, both financially and emotionally, than Dental Sleep Medicine( DSM). Hygienists, as well as dentists, are at the front line in the battle against obstructive sleep apnea( OSA). They ' re in the most opportune position to discover and treat sleep apnea affected patients. One out of every three patients they see has the symptoms of sleep disorder. Hygienists can recognize those signs and symptoms of OSA and provide for treatment.
The Importance of Discovering and Treating OSA
OSA can kill, or at minimum, will severely diminish quality of life. The repeated episodes of no oxygen passing to the brain for prolonged periods of time while asleep affects all the organs, and is connected to strokes, HBP, diabetes, dementia, weight gain and demeanor of people who have this disease.
Treatment in the Dental Office
The most appropriate and comfortable treatment for a patient with mild or moderate OSA is the oral appliance therapy( OAT). And for patients with severe OSA, who can not or will not tolerate the CPAP device, the intra-oral appliance is an effective alternative. Hygienists who are trained in DSM with the use of OAT, provide a very valuable service to the dentist and to their patients.
