Frederick Douglass was one of the many people that helped to end slavery. Douglass went around giving inspired speeches. He also started a newspaper, North Star, and worked in the Underground Railroad.

Slaves worked mainly on the tobacco, rice and indigo plantations of the southern coast. Other work, for example, women would help with the household chores.
