How to Recognize Anxiety in Students
by Eric Park
A
majority of students around the world have felt
anxiety at school because of the massive amount
of work and stress associated with the educational
process. Anxiety is a feeling of uneasiness, nervous-
ness, or distress caused by uncertain outcomes or
fear. A little bit of anxiety is normal for students who
care about their work; however, a lot of anxiety could
lead to negative outcomes.
There are multiple signs of anxiety that affect the
body and mind. Teens with signs of anxiety experi-
ence symptoms such as bad concentration, behav-
ioral change, aggression, and fear. Other symptoms
include bed wetting, sleep problems, or other physi-
cal symptoms.
Martina Barona Tortajada, a student in 10th grade,
is currently feeling anxiety from school. Barona be-
comes anxious about upcoming tests. She said, “I
continuously eat when I am doing homework or
studying for tests.” She also added that she obses-
sively checks Gradelink every five minutes.
There are a lot of causes for anxiety, or stress, for stu-
dents in school. Some of the common causes are a
tight schedule, academic pressure, bullying, or mas-
sive conflicts within the family.
Aileen Kang, another student in 10th grade, suffers
from anxiety. She also obsessively checks Grade-
link, but she is now scared to log in because of a bad
grade. Kang said she gets frustrated with her grades
and cries. When she is anxious, she likes to sleep,
watch youtube, and eat spicy food for relief.
There are a few tips to overcome anxiety. It can be
overcome by setting goals every day, using positive
words with a positive mind, and finding reasons to
laugh.
For some, it is easy to overcome anxiety, but for oth-
ers, it is difficult.
The Anxiety and Depression Association of America
said, “Anxiety disorders affect 25.1% of children be-
tween 13 and 18 years old.” Overall, anxiety is wide-
spread among teens.
