Student Council 2019-2020 A Student Council is a group of students elected by their peers to address issues of concern and to organize events and activities. This year, there were a total of seven students who decided to run for office, and four students were ultimately voted in on Sep- tember 6. Class President: Ken Hi- gashiyama Ken is a 17-year-old senior from Japan. He has been studying at SLAS for more than two years, and has participated in the school’s athletic teams. As the Pres- ident of the Student Coun- cil, Ken wants to satisfy the needs of the student body and listen to his constitu- ents. According to Ken, he wants the students to feel comfortable at SLAS, so that is why he decided to run for office. Class Vice President: Hana Kiyota Hana is a 17-year-old senior from Japan. She has been studying for three years at SLAS. “This year the Stu- dent Council has decided to sell food and beverages during lunch time, but we still don’t know if it’s going to be on A-day or B- day,” said Hana. She also stated that the Student Council would pick at least two or three representatives from each grade to make sure that every opinion is heard. Hana decided to run for Student Council this year because it would look good on her college application. Secretary: Mikaela Jane Cordero Mikaela is 16 and is a grade 12 student. She enjoys participating in school or- ganizations such as NHS and STUCO. When asked about why she thinks she was elected as the Secre- tary, Mikaela said, “Since I’ve been here at SLAS for four years now, they have known me as a student and a fellow schoolmate. I didn’t promise anything during my speech, but I made sure to that I will in- clude the regular students when it comes to decision making.” She also shared that she ran for office be- cause she wanted to make a change in her last year of high-school, and most importantly, it would look good in her college application. Treasurer: Jannah Karyl Jannah is a 17-year-old student from the Philip- pines and she is currently in her senior year. Jannah has been studying at SLAS for three years and she was always active in participat- ing in school events and activities. She revealed that the Student Council is still not sure if they are going to come through on their promises, but they will try their best to fulfill the change they promised during their speeches. “In or- der to include the students in our decision making, we’ve decided to conduct surveys and ask students about their preferences for upcoming events,” Jan- nah said. She decided to run for office because it would look good in her college application and also because she wanted to practice her leadership skills. by Jannah Karyl Angeles
