Community Service Activity Options in 2020

by Lynn Kang

Due to the coronavirus, students are experiencing difficulties earning community service hours. Community service activities are limited, especially for outside activities. Therefore, students do not know what community service activities to do, and it will be more complicated for them to earn hours than before.

Two years ago, the school offered two different trips to help people in various areas of China. Students were able to earn five hours on the Shanghai trip and 20 hours on the away trip. This year in SLAS, students need to get a total of 10 hours.
For available options of community service, students can check on their neighbors. If their neighbor needs a person for dog-walking, they can volunteer. If they have objects that neighbors are looking for, they can lend them. If they continue to work hard for their neighbors, they will be able to earn their community service hours very easily.
Airi, from 8th grade, said,“ I don’ t think we’ ll be able to go [ on a trip ] this year because usually by now, teachers would start planning the trips, maybe in 2022.”
Suggested activities were to help clean the classroom at the end of the year. Students can also help sell goods like how the NJHS is doing with the raffle tickets.
Andy, from 8th grade, said that he does not think they will be able to go on a community service trip. He suggested charity violin concerts, setting up or cleaning up in
will various places.
Mr. Jimmy Jack, a community service trip teacher, explained,“ We will most likely continue being cautious through the remainder of the school year.
The virus, sadly, still be present.” He recommended helping teachers around the school. Besides, older students can participate in playing games, arts and crafts, and teaching English to some of the primary / early years students.
Angela, from 8th grade, said,“ I don’ t think we’ ll go on community service trips this year, but I think we’ re supposed to help out in our neighborhoods for community service hours.” She also said,“ I think I’ ll be working in my neighborhood for community service hours probably.”
Since many outside activities are limited, the available community service activity options are indoor activities. It became much more complicated than the year before the last. Some activities are: help neighbors, help clean the classroom at the end of the year, and participate in violin concerts. However, many students had already got some hours for community service.
