English-only schools accustom students to learn and think in English thus allowing pupils to understand English as well as their native language .
SLAS is an American school , so students should be trying to gain a good grasp of the English language .
If one student does not use English in the classroom , then most likely they won ’ t be able to learn as fast as another who does . This is mainly because it enforces the student to do everything in English , which also means they are practicing English .
The use of other languages disrupts order and focus in the classroom .
Speaking foreign languages should not be banned and English should not be promoted more by punishing students who do not use it . Punishing students would just make them feel annoyed and irritated . Instead , this behavior should just be discouraged .
The good thing about speaking English frequently is that it helps students to quickly learn and improve their skills . If everyone spoke in English , students struggling with it would be able to quickly pick the language up out of survival .
Speaking English should definitely be encouraged because of all the benefits it brings , but people will not enjoy speaking English if it is enforced as a rule .
It would be near impossible to fully implement an English-only policy and it wouldn ’ t benefit the student body nearly as much as it would hurt it .
Language police would be needed . Even then , students would find ways to avoid areas under the jurisdiction , and possibly even have conversations in their L1 by texting .
Enforcing these rules takes away students ’ freedom , thus making the atmosphere of the school seem strict and unnatural instead of fun .
Ultimately , this would cause students to become frustrated and resentful towards the school as they are unable to express their thoughts and communicate freely .
