Hello SLAS students, staff and community!
Thank you for taking an interest in the latest edition of the SLAS TIMES! Students in the journalism classes
have been hard at work putting together the winter edition for you to enjoy. It should be noted that our
students raised the bar for this issue by submitting 28 articles! In addition, we added several new pages to
highlight a life at our school; we are calling the new section “Student Life” and can be found starting on page
32. Enjoy!
Jin Hyuk Choi is a Korean student at SLAS. He introduces Thanksgiving Day in Korea and explains student
reactions to this newly global holiday. His next article outlines a plan for the winter holiday where he
introduces famous places in Korea and transportation to get there. Also, he interviewed students to ask about
this year’s winter holiday.
Winter Holiday is almost here! Mikaela Cordero gives suggestions on where to go for a perfect winter vacation
with your family and friends. Next, test and exams are coming up but don’t stress out, because Mikaela gives
tips and suggestions to do well on your next test.
Since it’s almost Christmas Anna Kim decided to give you some Homemade DIY Christmas gifts ideas. These
DIY Christmas ideas are easy and fun to make. Next, winter is here and it’s the best season for coffee, so
Anna wrote about unique, tumbler, and tasty coffee shops in Shanghai.
Halloween is considered a global holiday so Soo Yeon Nam decided to explore the growth of Halloween
throughout the world. In her article, she looks into Dia de los Muertos (in Mexico), All Hallow’s Eve (in Ireland),
and Halloween (in United States). Do you like scary movies? In her second article, Soo Yeon introduces
different genres of horror films and top ten scary movies throughout the world!
As the SLAS Lady Wildcats prepare for the basketball season, Pilar Pascual wrote an article to show everyone’s
view on the team. The girls have been practicing hard and are ready to go undefeated against the other
schools in Shanghai. The SLAS Jog-A-Thon, held annually, was a success this year. In her article, Pilar highlighted
the positivity of this yearly event.
SLAS is a unique community with a melting pot of cultures. With Christmastime just around the corner, Emma
Wootan explores Christmas traditions from all over the world, including from countries like Spain, Ukraine
and the Philippines. In her latest article Emma also digs deep into the controversy behind tattoos and tries
to answer the question, “Why do people get tattoos?”
One of Dana Collins’s favorite holidays is Halloween and she enjoys seeing all the costumes at SLAS. In her
article, Dana states the negatives and positives of Halloween at SLAS, and what they can do to improve it.
Next, Dana tackles the issue of bullying, where she writes about how the anti-bullying week helps support
“SLAShing out Bullying” at our school.
What special event comes to your mind when you think of sweet lovers? It would be Valentine’s Day, but
did you know about a similar day called Pepero Day? Jin Young Han talks about Pepero Day’s fascinating
origin. Every school year, the Spanish class students go on a field trip to a Spanish or Latin American restaurant.
This year they visited a new Spanish restaurant named “Alma by DN.” Find out what Jin had to say about
their amazing field trip!
Have you ever visited any of the drink shops in shanghai that sell milk tea? Taro Ikeda 's article describes
the variety of drink shops in Shanghai that sell milk tea. Next, Taro has been wondering which brand of fast
food restaurant people like to eat. He interviewed his friends and asked which restaurant is their favorite.
In Jonason Zhang's first article, he took on the role of interviewing the P.E. teacher, Mr. Rodney J. Wadkins!
Next, as a member of the SLAS basketball team, he outlines the expectations for the 2016 basketball season.
Owning a pet has become a popular trend among families and individuals. In her article, Cathryn Jiang
decided to reveal some of the very unique pets owned by a SLAS teacher. In her next article, Cathryn uncovers
an astonishing discovery of living protists by the environmental science class.
Dieting has become a popular topic among teens and adults recently. In an effort to show people how to
diet responsibly, Jennifer Jiang went on to conduct research and interviews for this topic in the SLAS
community. Jennifer’s next article took on the challenge to interview the most active and valiant teacher in

How much does technology impact our education? James Ma explores this fascinating topic outlining both
pros and cons of using technology in the classroom. Don’t miss it! Next, the SLAS campus helps us all achieve
our dreams by providing facilities for a life-changing educational experience. James Ma describes the campus
and its facilities in vivid detail, explores its history, and describes the role it plays in facilitating children’s
education and personal successes.
Ashim Sapkota starts off with an interview with one of our science teachers, Mr. Cade McBroom. Students
will get to know him and for those who know him might learn a few more things they did not know about
him. In his second article will be about the multiple afterschool activities at SLAS. Students will get to know
their different options for afterschool activities.
