RUNNING ON AT JOG-A-THON
BY PILAR PASCUAL
The Jog-A-Thon was held on Friday, November 11, 2016,
at Shanghai Livingston American School (SLAS). The Jog-
A-Thon is one of SLAS’s special days, where students and
teachers run around the track, raising money for the
athletics department by competing against each other’s
houses. The event took place throughout the whole day;
the early years and elementary students ran in the
morning, while the secondary students ran in the
afternoon. It was a beautiful, sunny day; and it was a
great day for the whole school, and everyone had a
chance to participate and have fun.
Mr. Alexander Brown, the athletics director at SLAS and
the organizer of the Jog-A-Thon, briefly introduced the
Jog-A-Thon to us in an interview. “It is an event we hold
annually at SLAS whereby students in their houses run
around in relay. Their distances are added together,
giving us the final distance for each house. Students also
donate money for the school’s athletics department, and
we later use that money to buy new equipment.”Mr.
Brown also mentioned, “It was a very successful Jog-A-
Thon, where we raised about 18,000 RMB, more money
than last year. Also, we ran a bit farther as a school. It
was a very good and fun day, not to mention the amazing
weather that we had.” Mr. Brown likes having a Jog-A-
Thon, and he believes that it is a great event to have,
especially since it benefits the whole school community.
lap, passing the baton in relay to their teammates. After
the time finished, the runners are asked to stop, and the
laps that the team ran were counted and written down
on a large board in order to keep track of all the points.
After all the grades ran, all the distances were added up
and the total score determined the winner. The winner
of the event received a trophy and a certain amount of
points that were added to the team’s record. This year,
the Black Lions took the trophy home, thanks to their
strong team spirit and their great teamwork.
“Having a Jog-A-Thon is great because it helps us become
better athletes by running and we also get to help the
school at the same time,” said Sam Mun, a sophomore
at SLAS.Sam, as a part of the Black Lion family, is proud
of winning this year’s Jog-A-Thon. “I believe we won
because of how competitive we were and the great team
spirit that we shared,” he said. Sam believed it was a
successful Jog-A-Thon, and everyone had fun at the
event.
The Jog-A-Thon was very successful this year, especially
since everyone had fun participating. It was a good,
sunny day, and the competitive atmosphere made
everyone eager to run. All the students and teachers are
very thankful for having an event like this that helps them
connect and have fun together. The SLAS community
