DIVERSITY OF AFTERSCHOOL ACTIVITIES AT SLAS BY ASHIM SAPKOTA After school is a time when school is over and students are eager to leave. However, while most students and teachers are ready to do so, others stay behind to participate in various activities. These activities in general became known as just “afterschool,” a word for the classes and in school activities that occur right after school. There are many types of afterschool activities at Shanghai Livingston American School (SLAS) in general, but students mostly have two categories to choose from: sports, and other electives. However, there is also mandatory tutoring. and debate. These activities are not very popular between high school students but middle school students do take them. These classes are great way to pass time and for students to gain extra skills in life. Finally, there are the mandatory tutoring such as AP tutoring and regular tutoring. AP tutoring is for students who take AP courses. They attend tutoring to continue lessons, to ask questions, or to complete homework. The regular tutoring classes are for students are failing their classes. They go to tutoring to ask questions and get help from their teacher. “I have AP World History tutoring and afterschool basketball training. I enjoy basketball training but not my AP World History tutoring,” said Masaki Monji, a senior at SLAS. He went on to say, “but I think afterschool can help students excel in life.” “I have AP English, and AP Physics tutoring,” said Josh Tseng, a senior at SLAS. He added, “I don’t like AP Physics but I do enjoy Ms. Green’s tutoring because of the games we play. I think afterschool is a great way to help students to improve.” There are three different categories of afterschool activities, sports, other electives, and mandatory tutoring. First of all, sports are a common preference among students of who are willing to commit to a sports team. Joining a sport’s team allow students to participate or learn a sport of choice. It is a great way for students to get a concept of competitive sports which can influence their future occupation. Sports experiences are also great things to have on a university application. Next up, we have other electives such as chess, art, cooking, music, dance, Overall this is what afterschool activities are. They provide extra activities or extra help for students who want to learn more or who just want to use their spare time to do something. They provide a sanctuary without distractions for students who want to just quietly do their homework. These are the reasons for students to attend afterschool activity and for a better understanding of SLAS’s afterschool activities please visit Mr. Jay Weslock in room 311. 24
