Welcome to the spring issue of the SLAS Times!
Welcome to our third installment of your beloved SLAS Times! Right off the bat, let’s take a minute to congratulate the
journalism students for submitting a record 28 articles for this issue, well done! This semester was one of the most
eventful and included the journalism field trip to the office of That’s Shanghai to see how a real life magazine operates.

Jin Hyuk Choi submitted 2 different articles, an interview and review. In his first article on page 9, he interviews our
beloved Spanish teacher, Ms. Marta. In his next article he makes recommendations for top movies in 2016 and 2017.

Have you ever been to an amusement park in Shanghai? Mikaela Cordero’s article on page 7 gives suggestions on which
amusement parks are the best to visit. In her next article, on page 24, Mikaela delves into the history of Valentine’s Day.
Having a themed café is popular in Shanghai and Anna Kim found one of the most unique and interesting themes. Check
out her article on page 6 to find out what it is! Shanghai has a lot of restaurants but have you ever thought about having
Shanghainese cuisine? No worries! Anna’s next article on page 22 focuses on mouth watering local dishes!
Plastic surgery is considered a growing trend for teenagers. In her article on page 21, Soo Yeon Nam decided to explore
what makes plastic surgery popular. Next, Soo Yeon kept the theme of beauty as she looks into the art of decorating
your nails on page 23.
The middle school girl’s basketball team is poised to follow their high school team into successful and victorious season.
Pilar Pascual wrote about their expectations for this season on page 9. Do you ever wonder why you feel so down after
a long vacation? On page 17, Pilar looks into a phenomenon known as the “post-vacation blues” and how it affects us
upon returning to work.
Have you ever experienced a prolonged bout of procrastination? Are you a senior? Then you may have some down
with a degenerative condition known as senioritis. To find out more, read Emma Wootan’s article on page 10. Choosing
the right college for you can be really hard. There are many factors to consider when making this choice. Emma’s article
on page 14 explores the differences between the appearance of a college and the actual academic benefits.
With the easy access of tv series online, it has become easy to binge watch your favorite shows. In her article on page
11, Dana Collins explores ways you can still enjoy your favorite shows without overindulging. Next, Dana recaps the
Talent Show on page 26 and gives some good reasons why all schools should host school talent shows.
Jin Young Han looks into why so many young generations dream about becoming a famous idol or a celebrity. If you
want to find out more about the famous k-pop girl groups and the fruitful effort they put in for the fame, go to pg 13.

Learning skills that will help you in the future is very important when students are picking their classes. In her article
on page 8, Cathryn Jiang introduces us to the Graphic Design class and how these works help students to advance to
a higher level. On page 27, Cathryn reveals some of the most commonly used number symbolisms in China! Give
yourself a boost of trivia in Chinese culture!
There are certain books that are “must-reads” for students who attend AP English classes and The Scarlet Letter is one.
Check out Jennifer Jiang’s article on page 18 to find out what makes this book a classic novel. Next, explore with Jennifer
