THE SLAS TALENT SHOW BY DANA COLLINS School talent shows are always fun to participate in school life. On the 24th of February, SLAS hosted a talent show for students to show off their skills and have fun. Many of the students at SLAS have hidden talents that they have not had the opportunity to share with their fellow peers, but a talent show is a great opportunity for them to demonstrate their skills under the spotlight. In order to participate in the show, students had to audition to get in, and they could be rewarded with a certificate and a trophy. new ideas and acts to perform. At SLAS, students need to attend an audition to perform in the actual talent show; and this helps because it provides character-building and team-building lessons during try-outs. The talent show is also a great way to make money by selling tickets and snacks to students, teachers, and parents. Some concession ideas such as to sell food like popcorn, hotdogs, soft drinks, candy, and nuts to help raise money to pay for events like school dances, celebrations and necessary school appliances or equipment. Shawn Lupori, a junior at Livingston American School, commented on why he was performing in the school talent show, “I participated because my band class and I enjoy performing for the school, and playing in front of a live audience is a great experience to have.” He thought the judges were helpful, saying, “They do help because they push you to your best because you know you’ll get a score for your performance.” Cathryn Jiang, a junior at Shanghai Livingston American School who performed on the talent show last year, commented on how she felt being in the spotlight, “I don’t mind being in the spotlight, but if I had the choice then I wouldn’t want to be.” Every school should host a talent show for their students not only because it’s fun, but also because it unites the community and gives the students a chance to show off their special skills. Talent shows allow students to get together in order to think of 26 A talent show is a great idea for all schools to host a talent show in order to bring the school community together, let students show off their non-academic talents and to raise money for the school.
