PEOPLES HOBBIES AND INTERESTS AT SLAS BY TARO IKEDA Students at Shanghai Livingston American School (SLAS) have a variety of different hobbies and interests. At this school, all students have different classes so they could experience or explore new hobbies and interests. In addition, there are students from all over the world so students can learn new ideas and concepts from them. Sung Jun Kwon, a 11th grade student at SLAS said, “My top 3 hobbies are to play music with my piano and bass, and to take pictures.” Sung Jun is in a band with his friends and performs in a concert once every 3 months. He also added, “I became interested my hobbies when I was about 8 years old, and music sounded familiar to me. That’s why I started playing instruments.” In this world there are different kinds of hobbies and interests. There are collections, competitions, and observation hobbies. For indoor collections, people may collect action figures. These are action or character figures, made of plastic or other materials and often based on characters from a film, comic book, video games, or television programs. A casual indoor hobby for people is to cook food. Cooking is not just simply making something we can eat, it is an art! The cooking technology and care of preparing food for consumption 18 is where the art lays. Interest in something that people like to do is usually how a hobby develops. For example, someone may watch volleyball practice and then join the team to get better at it. This is an interest because you liked the sport while watching it. “My top 3 hobbies include playing musical instruments, collecting sneakers, and cooking different foods,” said Mr. Darrell Desales, the cooking teacher at SLAS. He also added, “As for playing instruments, I usually practice at home then I perform in front of an audience. I usually check online for the latest trends and wait for the release at stores. For cooking, I do it every day not because it is my work but it is my passion. Sharing my knowledge with my students is the reason why I love cooking the most.” Students at SLAS display interests in a wide range of topics and themes. By having all kinds of hobbies, people can exchange ideas with other people they meet. Thus, finding new hobbies and interests can help us now and later when we apply for college.
