There is something genuine and raw about plus size women and models

Going back to photography. While going to castings, I met quite a handful of beautiful plus size women and got to know more plus size fashion labels. But in looking at the commercial content that some labels produce, I came to realize that curvy fashion became a little bit one-sided: curvy women are expected to look … curvy, but there is not much content that showcases personality, individuality or even creativity. That is how I saw my opportunity in supporting a better and more diverse representation in fashion for plus women. I started photographing women to support their journey in the fashion industry, but also to show content diversity. This idea is still evolving. Almost all shoots on @ urbanephoto were pro bono. In addition, curvy women are great medium to work with for me as a photographer. There is something genuine and raw about plus size women and models, and I think this should be captured as it, to me, could be more interesting than straight size commercial work.
I also strive to work with smaller, local designers for my personal projects that carry out important messages whether it’ s style or sustainability. I salute people like Yona, Shegul, Universal Standard. I recently met Lisa Aviva and we had a fabulous time shooting images and talking about sustainable fashion. There are so many other up and coming labels out there that are not only about consumerism and the typical looks,( Sarah Manning, TielDorein). Let’ s help them out!
