Q&A Ask Yvonne Are you thinking about trying one of the latest, on-trend clinic treatments? Read our resident aesthetic nurse Yvonne Senior’s honest advice before booking an appointment. What is dermaplaning? Dermaplaning is a safe, highly effective physical exfoliation procedure. It requires the use of a sterile surgical scalpel to gently ‘shave’ the face by removing the topmost layer of dead skin, along with the fine vellus hair also known as ‘peach fuzz’. Dermaplaning also triggers the cell regeneration process and can help improve the appearance of things like acne scarring and hyperpigmentation. The effects of the procedure are instan- taneous, leaving your skin glowing with a smooth texture. There are very few cons for most skin types but, occasionally, some may experience slight sensitivity and redness afterwards. It is a myth that the hair will grow back thicker, darker or coarser. However, if you suffer from ex- cessive facial hair or a hormone imbalance, regular waxing, threading or laser hair removal give you a better result. If you suffer from active acne, rosacea, eczema, psoriasis or pigmentation, dermaplaning is not for you and should be avoided. Most fillers are temporary, but are there any permanent options? The majority of dermal fillers are biode- gradable and are only temporary. They eventually breakdown and leave the body by natural processes. When it comes to permanent fillers, they stay in the body and cannot be broken down. Because of this, the safety profile is lower and the number of serious complications are higher than with temporary fillers. If, after having permanent fillers, the results are uneven or unsatisfactory, you are unfor- tunately stuck with them. As the face ages and fat pads and tissue move, this type of filler stays in one place, while tempo- rary fillers can be adapted to suit these changes in your face, ensuring you remain looking your best, with filler in all the correct places.
