our immune system does an amazing
job at keeping you fit and healthy for a
big chunk of the year but when the
dark nights roll in and the temperatures drop,
your body’s arsenal of virus-fighting cells, proteins and tissues struggle to hold back the onslaught of bacteria, leading to the dreaded winter
cold. But before you surrender, start adding
more of these foods into your weekly meal plan
to give your immune system a better chance at
surviving the winter unscathed.
Stock up on winter vegetables
Nothing eases the chill like a warm stew or
soup packed with carrots and swede, but these
root vegetables don’t just taste great – they
are amazing immune boosters. They contain
beta-carotene, a type of carotenoid and pre-cur-
sor to Vitamin A, which supports the body’s
mucous membrane that can be found protecting your vital organs and the inside of your
mouth. By keeping this membrane functioning
properly it becomes harder for bacteria to enter
the bloodstream, so your susceptibility to colds
and flu dramatically decreases.
Add garlic to everything
Your significant other might not thank you
for it but adding garlic to your evening meal
will work wonders for your body’s immunity.
When crushed or chopped, garlic releases
sulphuric compounds which improve not only
your natural defence system but the number
of virus-fighting T-cells in the bloodstream.
