GET YOUR SKINCAR
FIVE A DAY
By Danielle Hadley
H
ave you had your five-a-day?
No, we’re not talking about fruits
and vegetables, we’re talking
about the essential products your skin
needs every day to stay fit and healthy.
Humans are funny creatures. Even though we
like routine and our skin benefits when it’s
treated consistently, the more complex a regime
is, the trickier it is for us to commit. A 10-step
Korean skin care routine is unrealistic for most
of us and a simple cleanse-tone-moisturise
regime feels too basic now we know so much
more about our complexions and how to care
for them. “I see so many people layer numerous
products on to their skin to fix multiple skin
issues, however, we need to move the focus away
from solving skin problems to creating healthy
skin at the source,” explains Jane Scrivner, cer-
tified therapist, industry expert and founder of
her own skincare range. “If you are nourishing,
balancing and replenishing both the acid mantle
and barrier function then your skin will glow
with good health without the need for excessive
products.” It’s finding this perfect balance
between simplicity and effectivity that leads us
to the five-a-day routine. By having just five
key products, employed in both your day and
night time routines, your skin has everything
it needs to stay healthy, in a manageable and
easy-to-commit-to regime. So, what should you
be using?
Cleanser
The first step in both your morning and night
time routine, a cleanser clears away the daily
build-up of dead cells, sebum, impurities,
toxins and make-up sitting on the surface of
the skin so that it can properly absorb the active
ingredients found in the more corrective steps
of your routine. “If you’re using the right
cleanser, all your follow-on products are going
to work much more effectively,” explains Jane.
“In the evenings, I would always recommend
to double cleanse - you want your first cleanse
to remove all the make-up from the surface
while your second cleanse is to actually clean
the skin.”
