length and depth of services varies from program to program , so you may find workshops that last only two hours or some that last up to five weeks .
Language programs
In most cases , migrants and refugees can access language classes for free through the Adult Migrant English Program ( AMEP ). The AMEP delivers English tuition to help eligible adult migrants and refugees settle successfully in Australia . The program is available to migrants from the humanitarian , family and skilled visa groups , and the number of hours of free English tuition depends on individual circumstances .
Libraries
Going to your local library needs to be on your must-do list . Australian libraries are not only full of great books in every subject you can imagine , they also have movies and DVDs to borrow for free , which can be used to develop your English and learn about the Australian culture . Some libraries also hold workshops on topics from job searching to financial literacy and English conversation ( all free ).
Community centres
Each local council will have various community centers for different purposes . These centres are great places to go for general information and to have some fun , exercise and make connections with your neighbours . Some community centres also offer low-cost workshops , parenting programs , playgroups , youth activities and events for all ages .
Local councils
Local councils not only manage rates and garbage collection , but many have various community development officers / coordinators , early learning educators , and family workers on staff . They organise fantastic school holiday programs , parenting programs , computer classes , cooking programs , conversational English classes and much more . If you have an idea for a new program or notice a need in the community , make sure you contact your local council as they may be able to assist you in developing it .
Regulatory bodies
There are various regulatory bodies in Australia that manage professions where licenses are required . Examples of such professions are doctors , lawyers , pharmacists , nurses , teachers , engineers and electricians . It is your responsibility to find out whether your occupation is regulated and what steps you need to take to become licensed in your field . Processes may be short , such as taking an exam , or long , requiring many courses and exams .
Credentials evaluation services
These services , as their names indicates , evaluate your credentials by measuring how they compare with the Australian education system . They do not guarantee employment and cannot qualify you for a specific occupation , nor will they provide guidance on what to do next . An example of such an organisation is the Overseas Qualification Unit ( OQU ) in Perth , Western Australia .
