After Make in India and Digital India, the Modi Government

(BJP) launched another programme-skill India. Its objective

is to create employment for youth women & handicap. India faces

shortage of unt rained and unskilled workers. In India, only 2.4% of the

workforce in India has undergone formal skill training as compared to 75%

in Germany, 66% in the UK, 82% in Japan and 51% in USA, 89% in Korea.

Large number of the educated section have little or no job skills, making them largely

unemployable.

The government of India also launched the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY), skill loan scheme.

Skill Loan scheme in this credit ranging from Rs 5,000 to 1.5 lakhs will be made available to 34 lakh youth

across the country.

The launch of PM Modi’s skill India scheme has benefitted many. A 19-year old Ankita Rabha from a poor family

wanted to study computer hardware. But, due to financial problem she could not study. PM Modi handed Rs 30,000 cheque

to poor girl to pursue a vocational course.

Skill India emphasizes to skill the youths in such a way so that they get employment and also improve entrepreneurship. Provides support, guidance and training for all occupations that were of traditional type like welders, blacksmiths, masons, cobblers, etc.

"The poor people are no more willing to beg but to earn through self-respect....Skill India initiative is not merely to fill pockets but to give a sense of self-confidence to the poor," he said at the function attended by Union Ministers including Arun Jaitley, Manohar Parrikar, Suresh Prabhu, Rajiv Pratap Rudy.

"In poor families, parents usually tell their wards to learn some skill so that they can stand on their feet. If this is an household issue, why it has not reached the ears of the government. We have heard this pain," Modi said, adding that its poor people who are left behind in the race.

Stating that some work has been done in this area, Modi said the Centre, in co-ordination with the state governments, wants to take this initiative forward in a new way.

Talking about demographic advantage, Modi said although 65 per cent of the country's population is less than 35 years, how would they meet challenges if they are not skilled or else they will "become challenge for us".

Aim of skill India:

a) Enhancing individuals‟ employability (wage/ self employment) and ability to adapt

to changing technologies and labour market demands.

b) Improving productivity and living standards of the people.

c) Strengthening competitiveness of the country.

d) Attracting investment in skill development
