IB English Language & Literature (Higher and Standard Level)
Entry Requirements Grade B in IGCSE English Language and IGCSE English Literature or equivalent
Where next? Universities offer a range of English Language and English Literature courses as well as combined
Language and Literature courses. As the degree is non-vocational it can be transferred to a range
of careers, most typically media, journalism, publishing, advertising, marketing, law, public
sector, human resources, business and finance, public relations, social work, teaching, academia,
tourism and events management.
WHAT WILL I STUDY?
A breadth of non-literary texts covering at least six different text types.
Higher Level: Six works including two in translation covering three major literary genres, three periods and three places.
Standard Level: Four works including at least one in translation covering two major literary genres, two periods and two
places.
Areas of exploration:
Readers, writers and texts: the nature of literature
Time and Space: contexts of production and reception
Intertextuality: connecting diverse texts, traditions, creators and ideas.
HOW IS THE COURSE ASSESSED?
Paper 1 (30%) Guided analysis of unseen texts of any genre
Standard Level: 1 extract
Higher Level: 2 extracts
Paper 2 (25%) Literary Comparative Essay
Individual Oral Assessment (20%) with a focus on how two different texts approach one same global issue.
Essay (Higher Level) (20%)
1200 – 1500 word formal essay following a line of inquiry of student’s choice into one of the texts studied
