A WEEK AT WINCHESTER COLLEGE
A WEEK AT WINCHESTER COLLEGE
A TYPICAL DAY
MORNING
From Monday to Saturday, the day begins at 0745 for breakfast and from 0845 on Sunday. Both boarders and day pupils need to be present for breakfast and registration at 0800, with lessons taking place from 0845 to 1040 and 1105 to 1300. In any study periods( known as bookies), you may choose to study in the school’ s library( a 14th century building housed in the oldest part of the school campus) or one of the communal study areas in your house.
LUNCH
Lunch at Winchester is a unique event with all pupils eating in their boarding house each day at 1300. You can expect many lively and informed conversations with friends and staff.
AFTERNOON
Afternoons are devoted either entirely to extra-curricular pursuits, or to a mix of lessons and extra-curricular activities. We hope that all Sixth Form pupils will take advantage of the extensive extra-curricular activities on offer, whether that is sport, community service, music, art, drama, the many clubs and societies, or a combination of several of the above!
EVENINGS
Tea is served at 1800. 1900 to 2100 is toytime; a period of time when you will complete homework and other lesson preparation. A break and snack is provided at 2000. Once toytime finishes at 2100, Preces is held. Here, there will be announcements about sport fixtures, upcoming concerts and talks and other notices. After Preces, you will have some free time to socialise with your friends. Houses should be quiet from 2230, with lights out at 2245 for VIBk2( Year 12) and 2300 for VIBk1( Year 13).
We warmly encourage both boarders and day pupils to experience the full range of activities that Winchester College uniquely provides, especially in their first term. For day pupils, we take the approach of‘ everything but the bed’, meaning they experience everything a day at Winchester has to offer before returning home. At the same time, day places do provide pupils with the opportunity to shape their own finish time, in partnership with their Housemaster or Housemistress.
Day pupils will be expected to stay for tea every day from 1800-1830 and at least one day a week for homework which finishes at 2115.
WEEKENDS
Saturday mornings follow a normal weekday timetable until 1300, when house lunch takes place. In the afternoons most pupils will have sport, music or other extra-curricular commitments. Save on certain weekends, published at the start of term, such as Remembrance Sunday, day pupils are welcome to go home after their Saturday afternoon commitments, returning to school at 0800 on Monday morning.
“ A typical day could consist of a full day of lessons, a music lesson, a netball training session, a talk or a concert in the evening and that’ s so much more than I used to do.”
Amara, Sixth Form entrant
