THE FUTURES DEPARTMENT

THE FUTURES DEPARTMENT

The school’ s highly experienced Futures department offers comprehensive support for your career and progression throughout the Sixth Form, providing advice on future career options, course choice, universities, apprenticeships, and gap years.
Throughout your time at Winchester, you will benefit from a progressive careers programme which allows you to explore and learn about yourself and your interests, begin to explore career options, prepare for and ultimately make successful applications to top universities and degree apprenticeships. This is conducted through a series of self-directed learning and exploration, group sessions, visiting speakers, bespoke sessions with subject experts, and careers guidance appointments with the Head of Careers. Pupils can book to see the Head of Careers as many times as they would like to throughout their time at the school. All new entrants will have an initial meeting with the Head of Careers and can also undertake their Morrisby Profile and interview with a trained Morrisby Adviser.
Pupils in Sixth Form are invited to join Wykeham Links, a networking platform for pupils to connect with Old Wykehamists and current and former parents to harness additional careers advice. Pupils benefit from connecting with experts in their fields and individuals with a wealth of experience who are able to provide CV advice, university insight, and mentoring. The annual Futures Fair also provides pupils with another opportunity to network and gain valuable advice from delegates from a range of sectors and careers.
University Support
Our pupils gain places at some of the world’ s most competitive universities. In 2024, 13 % of pupils achieved a place at Oxbridge with 12 % gaining places at Ivy League or elite US universities. Our other common destinations include Imperial, Durham, UCL, Bristol, and Edinburgh.
“ Going to universities overseas was always something I had in mind, but Winchester really opened that door for me.”
The school has extensive experience in helping pupils to prepare successful applications to the most competitive universities in the UK and worldwide. Universities value our pupils for the clarity and rigour of their intellectual training— both their outstanding exam results and the extra breadth and challenge provided by Div.
Preparation is overseen by the Director of Higher Education. Our teaching staff, many of whom have master’ s degrees and doctorates from the world’ s top universities, support pupils through tutorials, speaker events, societies, mock interviews, and preparation for admissions tests. Towards the end of VIBk2( Year 12), each pupil is assigned an individual mentor to oversee their application who helps with their personal statements, choose universities and courses, and devise an appropriate programme of summer work. Our extensive records of pupil applications in previous years allow us to give pupils and their families a precise sense of what it takes to gain admission to even the most competitive institutions worldwide.
