LAND OF LIVING SKIES
The greatest
of plains
BY ANDREW HILTZ
The province’s designated adventurer for 2017,
Andrew “the Saskatchewander” Hiltz is spending the
year experiencing all the great things to see and do in
his home province. You can follow his progress across
the land of living skies at saskatchewanderer.ca.
If you’re from anywhere else in Canada, I
guarantee that Saskatchewan will surprise
you. It doesn’t matter where in the province
you find yourself, the people here will make
you feel like you’re home. Our biggest cities
feel like tight-knit communities, our towns
embrace you like family.
One area that should not be missed while
exploring Saskatchewan is the southwest. A
night spent beneath the stars in Grassland
National Park will turn anyone into a
return visitor. Hiking through the rolling
hills of the prairies will be unlike anything
you’ve ever experienced, and whether it’s
sunrise or sunset, our living skies will take
your breath away.
All of the adventure you’re going to find in
the southwest will make you hungry. Lucky
for you, two of my favourite restaurants in
the province are located nearby.
For lunch, head to Eastend where you’ll
find Cafe Terra; here, a meal picked fresh
from the garden awaits you. The coffee is
roasted in-house and everything is served
on or in their handmade pottery. For supper,
take a drive up the road to Shaunavon —
population 1800 — where Garrett and Kristy
of Harvest Eatery will treat you to a feast as
good as anything you could hope to find in
Canada’s bi ggest cities.
I grew up in Coronach, a small agricultural
community along the southern border,
but I currently live in Moose Jaw, about
160 km north. When planning a trip to
Saskatchewan, especially a road trip, follow
this one piece of advice: Get off the Number
1 Highway and explore!
