HOMEWARD

BY JASON NUGENT
An adventure and rally photographer, Jason has explored more
than 90 countries and has received national recognition for
his work. He has been featured in adventure, fine art and
automotive publications, including Six Star, and was awarded an
infrastructure grant from the New Brunswick Arts Board in 2016.
I believe I live an interesting life. From my work
as a photographer, I get to travel all over the world
and have my pick of places to live in Canada.
For the past 15 years, I’ve called Fredericton, the
capital of New Brunswick, my home.
Born in Bathurst, I left home only to go to
university. I spent many years away, but always
believed that returning to New Brunswick
was something I was meant to do. It’s easy to
understand why, particularly for an outdoor
photographer: Our province has four distinct
seasons to take advantage of, national parks to
explore, and both large and small things to see.
We have Mount Carleton, the highest peak in the
Maritimes, Fundy National Park with the highest
tides in the world, and the tiny purple violet, our
provincial flower. Nature and wildlife abound here.
New Brunswick is about more than just being
outside though. The people make it. As the
country’s only bilingual province, there is so
much proud Acadian culture to discover. Both of
my grandmothers were proud French-Canadians
and, growing up, they made sure I understood that
part of my heritage. Annual trips to the Village
Historique Acadien in Bertrand and the Festival
Acadien de Caraquet were always in order. The
festival is one of the top tourist attractions in
Atlantic Canada and is definitely worth a visit.
No matter where work takes me, I strive to be
home for the Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival in
September, the Shediac Lobster Festival in July,
and Frostival in the winter. Spending time with
fellow New Brunswickers rejuvenates me and
reminds me that I’m part of a community with so
much to offer. Life is just so good here.
