ADVENTURE Bison are the largest land mammal in North America and there are a lot of them here. They were reintroduced to the park in 2005—today, they roam free and are nearly everywhere. If you take the ecotour scenic drive through Grasslands National Park, you will almost certainly see them. This is especially true after prescribed burns, when the majestic creatures emerge to feast on the tender green shoots growing in the burnt areas. I encounter bison many times during my time in the park. But I also see other animals like prairie dogs, foxes, mule deer and countless different species of birds. (As you may have guessed by now, the park is a veritable paradise for wildlife enthusiasts.) The weather clears in the afternoon and the landscape showcases the huge skies for which the Canadian Prairies are famous. These final scenes confirm for me that Grasslands National Park is truly a gem — not just for Saskatchewan, but for the entire nation. It is absolutely worth the visit and, if you do visit, be prepared to marvel at the surroundings, both during the day and at night. I certainly did. 32 six star magazine
