A
ll road trips require planning. A 3,000-kilometre drive from Toronto to the
Gaspé region in Québec with young children requires special planning. You
need to account for: food stops, bathroom breaks, sleeping arrangements, more
food stops and more bathroom breaks. Everything must be put in place months
in advance. A road trip with young children is like a high-wire act where the
slightest stumble sends the artist tumbling to the ground and the audience (read:
the children) screaming uncontrollably at the sight.
The Gaspésie, as the region is known in la langue française, is home to the famous
Roche Percé, a massive limestone rock off the coast with a hole “pierced” through
it. Like the Rockies, moose or Peggy’s Cove, la Roche Percé holds a central place
in Canadian iconography. Given its name by Samuel de Champlain, the French
founder of Québec City, Roche Percé is the site of a local legend involving lost love,
Spanish pirates and the apparition of a beautiful woman.
