Rollercoaster
ride for CRC
favourites
While this year’s chase for the Canadian Rally Championship
(CRC) has not been smooth sailing, the Subaru Rally Team Canada
(SRTC) is mounting a serious comeback. At the Pacific Forest Rally,
held the first weekend of October in Merritt, BC, Antoine L’Estage
and Darren Garrod captured all 10 stages and took the overall win
by over seven minutes.
With this result, the SRTC duo moved into second place overall
in the title hunt, just one point behind another Subaru pairing
of Maxime Labrie and co Anik Barrette. “This victory was really
important for the whole team,” said L’Estage following the
convincing win. “We had some challenges earlier this year, but now
we are in a good position in the championship. The work’s not done,
we still have two events to go...”
This year’s Pacific Forest Rally was notable for a few other reasons.
The third-place team, driver Derik Nelson and Adam Newell,
powered onto the podium in their Subaru BRZ, a remarkable feat
considering most of their competition was running AWD machinery.
And development work continued for the Subaru Crosstrek
Competition Platform, prepared by SRTC operating team Rocket Rally.
At the previous national round, Rallye Défi, driver David Nickel and
co-driver Chris Kremer were vying for overall victory at one point.
The team managed to bring the Crosstrek to the finish there and at the
Pacific Forest Rally, a great showing for a brand-new car.

A return home for dinner

Being able to sit down with family around the dinner table, laughing, relaxing and
enjoying a meal is something that many of us might take for granted. The families
at Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) Toronto, living there to be close to their
children receiving care, don’t have that chance very often. Even a few moments’ relief
from the stress of their situation can go a long way.
Since 2008, Subaru Canada has been a proud participant in the RMHC “Home
for Dinner Program,” providing families staying there a home-cooked meal after
a long day at the hospital. On June 11 of this year, a group of 18 Subaru employee
volunteers and one therapy dog, Emma, arranged a special night where the families’
only responsibility was to relax and break bread together.
Our Subaru volunteers happily took care of all the groceries, the preparation, the
serving and the clean-up. The BBQ-based menu, which fed 155 family members,
consisted of well over 25 different dishes, sides, beverages and desserts with alternatives
for picky eaters or those with dietary restrictions. “We always prepare plenty of food
and bring empty containers to fill,” said Doula Garnavos, Administrative Coordinator
for Subaru Canada, who oversees the event. “We then stock the fridge with leftovers
for the families to enjoy in the next couple of days following the event.”
In speaking to Judy Noordermeer, Associate Director, RMHC (Toronto), she
explained the importance of this night: “Families are so grateful to the volunteers
who come to the House to serve a Home for Dinner. And Subaru employees have
been among the most loyal, year after year. In a word, the Subaru Home for Dinner
volunteers bring comfort to our families. The meals they serve are nutritious, and
delicious, and it is exactly what families need after a long day at the hospital.”
