THE LOCATION
A high-pitched hum echoes through a 315,000
square-foot hangar in Southern California. Formerly
the home of Howard Hughes’ mighty Spruce Goose,
once the largest airplane ever built, the structure
temporarily houses an entirely new kind of aircraft: a
flying drone quadrotor on a test flight. Commercial
crewmembers check the lighting, prepare cameras
and audio equipment, and huddle around this single
tiny machine, imagining how this cavernous space
will look when filled with hundreds of them.
The hangar itself is not new to video productions.
Converted to a sound stage in the mid 1990s,
it’s been used for many major Hollywood
extravaganzas, including Titanic, Star Trek and End
of Days. But for true car enthusiasts, nothing excites
