The Green LIght: WHat Does it Mean?

By: Rachel Smith

The green light is a symbol of Gatsby and what he wants to achieve. In chapter one of the book Gatsby reaches Toward the light in the darkness. This light shines bright while he is away from Daisy, his one true love, but in chapter five Nick says that the light and its "colossal significance” have seemed to “vanished forever.” This is due to the fact that Daisy is with Gatsby, and that is what he has dreamed of ever since he first met Daisy. Then in chapter nine when Gatsby is gone Nick says "Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that’s no matter—tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther..." Nick is saying how gatsby wanted to acheive what the green light had to offer. This shows that in this book the grenn light represented a goal that is waiting to be reached.

Gatsby looks out at the green light, representing all of his hopes and dreams for the future
