Chamonix, France 1924

The US comes home with just four medals after the first winter Olympics in Chamonix, France. With only sixteen events and ten countries placing for medals over 10,000 people attended. The International Olympic Committee is calling Winter Sports Week an overwhelming success.

Just three years ago in 1921 the International Olympic Committee decided to hold the very first winter Olympic games. Chamonix, France was to be the location. The US took home four medals along with nine other countries that placed. Our very own Charles Jewtraw was the first winter games champion winning the 500m speed skating event. When asked what it felt like he replied, “It’s an honor. To be the first person to win a gold medal is incredible. We find it very exciting for winter athletes to get a chance to show their skills.”

The biggest winner throughout all of Winter Sports Week was Finland’s Clas Thunberg. Thunberg took home five medals including three gold ones in the speed skating event. 258 athletes participated this year 11 of them being women.

The medal presentation is set to occur on February 5th.

First Winter Sports Week: "An Extreme Success!"

A gold medal, like the one shown here, will be given to 38 athletes in February.
