Issue 15: Overseas Community Involvement Programmes (OCIPs)
Recommendation 3: Local Crowdfunding Efforts
• Although not every individual is able to embark on an OCIP, they can contribute to the
welfare of the foreign communities via crowdfunding initiatives especially in times of
natural disasters or political instability.
• For instance, university student organisations can collaborate and engage in such fund-
raising initiatives.
• These organisations, if collecting donations from public, need to publish an article or
report on the progress of donations collected so as to gain greater credibility from the
public.
• After performing thorough needs analysis of the foreign Tamil communities, a network of
undergraduate and graduate engineers can be formed from the local Singapore
universities to create products that can be used in Tamil communities abroad to uplift
their lives. E.g. water filters, solar panels.
Recommendation 4: Improving the SINDA Young Leaders Programme (SYLP)
• SYLP currently allows the youth participants to engage in a self-initiated local community
project and a pre-arranged overseas project.
• Some of the youths feel empowered as they have ownership over their local community
projects, but they felt that more ownership could be given for the overseas projects.
• Also, overseas projects to Tamil (or Indian) communities abroad would be a great way for
the youths to learn more about the Tamil communities and give back to their community.
