I realized I was standing on a vantablack floor in the middle of nowhere,
and that I couldn’t remember anything.
Through my peripheral vision, I caught sight of a deep black speck.
Cautiously sauntering towards it, the dot started to take the clear form of a
humanoid figure, sitting rather uncomfortably and finishing some sort of
paperwork. It was only after I could properly observe his pale countenance that
he glanced up from his neatly piled documents to see me. Getting close enough,
I finally saw that his visage wasn’t just lifeless. His face was the literal night sky
- devoid of any features or emotions - composed of several stars and clusters
of celestial bodies.
“What is your universe identification number?”
“I...beg your pardon,” I appropriately answer back.
He let out a long and clearly exasperated sigh.
“Please write your universe identification number.”
“I have no idea what you’re talking about. Can I ask where I am, and who
you are?”
The man quickly lost his composure, and he didn’t need facial features
for me to recognize it. He flicked his fingers, and everything around me instantly
dematerialized.
I jumped upon hearing a terrible, ear-splitting sound, and a single dot
appeared right next to my ankle. I waited for a long time. Nothing happened.
The white dot, discernibly clear of any tincture, was fixated at the same spot.
Could I be trapped in here for hours, maybe days? I groaned, and for the sake
of my sanity, I closed my eyes for some rest.
After opening my eyes, I realized that I was watching clusters of quarks
and atoms disband to form the universe as I slowly watched the Big Bang of the
universe.
Nineteen billion years of observation later, every star had been born and
had died, and so had the entire universe. Species had fought wars for control,
developed inventions and destroyed planets, and had laughed, frowned, and
shed many tears, all until they ended up closing their eyes for the last time. I
was now enlightened with details of every single event that had occurred in
the history of the universe. A startling flash of white had occurred, and I had
returned to the area with the same desk-working man.
