Vanished Teresa Lee There was something enigmatic About you. The way that people treated you As if they were happy to see you. They admired your presence, But you could see the fear in their eyes, A hint of disdain, Barely noticeable underneath Their stained smiles And enthusiastic words. People loved you, They all wanted something From you that I didn’t understand. I also don’t understand what Could possibly have motivated me to Breathe you in. That instant hit me like a train Going 300 miles per hour. My palms tingled, And my stomach churned. I absorbed your every word, And I held them in my hands, Fingers squeezing tight around them. But no matter how hard I grasped them And dug my fingernails into their flesh, They vanished as soon as they Escaped your mouth. I felt like a child chasing after soap bubbles. It was pointless, Dumb, And I knew that there was nothing good in it for me. 16
